Connecting the Dots: ASQ to Standards-Based Outcomes to Planning and Guiding Children's Play

with Dr. Gayla Lohfink

March 3, 2020
8:30 am - 2:30 pm

at the Southwest Plains Conference Center
810 W. Lark Avenue, Sublette

ASQ data analysis begins the "what we do" as teachers to intentionally align the five developmental areas of the ASQ-3 and the seven behavioral domains of the ASQ:SE-2 to KS standard-based outcomes and given curriculum resources. Purposeful play offers a pedagogical approach for children to naturally inquire and investigate hands-on materials, problem-solve, interact and communicate with others, experience autonomy, and gain content knowledge in various disciplines. Working toward a learning goal is an intentional focus of purposeful play.  The "how" to focus on that goal involves planning play units, gathering resources (like picture books), and then interacting within a child's play to foster inquiry, oral language, and vocabulary, among other content learning and skills.

Take Aways from the Day:

  1. Review components of ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2; utilize sample data to analyze and organize classroom reports
  2. Awareness of early childhood standards and kindergarten KS ELA standards, Social Studies Standards, and Science Standards
  3. Practice planning purposeful play units aligned to ELA, Social Studies, and Science Standards
  4. Identify picture book resources to utilize within play units
  5. Experience embedding ASQ-3 developmental areas and ASQ:SE-2 behavioral areas within purposeful planning units of study by actually studying and modeling teacher examples of "HOW" to interact within a child's play experience
