First-Ever Federal Summit on Bullying Held

No student should feel unsafe in school.  As educators, as state and local officials -- and, yes, at the federal level -- we simply have not taken the problem of bullying seriously enough.  This past August, we held the first-ever federal summit on bullying with representatives from across the federal government.  While this is a good start, we must sustain this commitment and do much more.

No school can be a great school until it is a safe school.  Bullying is a moral and an educational issue.  It goes to the heart of school performance and the ability of a student to learn.

Assistant Deputy Secretary for Safe and Drug-Free Schools Kevin Jennings is the lead on bullying issues.
You may reach him through his assistant, Emily Miles, at Emily.Miles@ed.gov or 202-245-7835.
