Southwest Plains Regional Service Center (SWPRSC) and a total of 9 Western Kansas school districts are benefitting from a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) federal grant. SWPRSC in partnership with Colby, Colby Sacred Heart, Deerfield, Holcomb, Meade, Oakley, Scott City, Spearville, and Sublette are currently in the first year of the three year grant program entitled Project Generation Fitness.
This program is attempting to move participating schools away from the traditional, competitive sports-oriented classes and toward the “New PE” research-based curricula championed by the Centers for Disease Control. Project Generation Fitness is implementing a research-based PE curriculum; its mission is to provide all students with the opportunity of learning to move, moving to learn, and experiencing the joy of movement while employing movement themes based on fundamental skills used throughout one’s lifetime.
In the addition of a new PE curriculum, teachers are also receiving training for integrating nutrition into their classrooms. These trainings will assist PE teachers and enable their students to reach the state PE standards and to encourage them to make life-long healthy choices in fitness and nutrition.
The Carol M. White PEP’s focal point is to
increase knowledge and awareness of childhood health and to
decrease the rising obesity rates in America’s youth. The program
supports community-based organizations and local school districts
who desire to begin, or enhance physical education programs for
K-12 students.
