"I enjoy having fun in the classroom.  It's a good mixture of feeling like we're a family, we're having fun, but we're also going to get something accomplished in the process." - Jason Sickel, KTOY 2017

"For many of us, the daily connections we make with colleagues and students have become routine.  But these connections can make all the difference for our students." - Dr. Rick Wormel (Jan 15th @ SWPRSC)

"The key component is the people, not the programs." - Todd Whitaker (April 16th in Wichita)

Jason Sickel, Kansas Teacher of the Year 2017, will be sharing his passion for teaching and specific strategies he uses to create Positive and Powerful Relationships in his classroom.  Jason and the 7 other Regional KTOYs have traveled across Kansas for the last 6-8 months, observing classrooms and talking to stakeholders about education.  Jason is the choir teacher at Blue Valley North and brings thirteen years of experience building the classroom climate that is safe and welcoming for a wide range of students.  One of his students is quoted as saying, "His class is like family".

After Jason's presentation, Carol Panzer will continue the day by expanding on the needs of our students and why building relationships is the key to student success.  She will bring in some of the brain-based research about trauma-sensitive schools and how stress impacts our students.  This topic directly reflects on the KESA Relationship "R" for each district.

Objectives for the Day:

  • Catch Jason Sickel's passion and vision for building positive relationships
  • Learn specific ways Jason creates a classroom culture that feels like family
  • Learn about the impact of stress on our students' brains
  • Take away ideas to use in your classroom to build positive and powerful relationships
