Counselors Council Minutes

Feb. 14th, 2008

Sixteen counselors attended the meeting.  Joe Coles welcomed everyone and reviewed the day's agenda. He then had Jara Wilson introduce herself and speak about her role at the Service Center.

Tara Salmans, Dodge City Middle School Counselor, presented their Bully/Crime Stoppers Program; she shared the specifics of their program and answered questions. Lori Stein relayed their bully stoppers e-mail address for students to e-mail their bully reports in case they do not want to be seen putting a piece of paper in a box.

An IDL connect with Kent Reed, KSDE followed. He shared updates on MTSS, PBS, and the Comprehensive Program and some Amendments to SB 68 that have been proposed by the Legislature. He relayed that schools are to have their staff and students trained every year according to SB 68. He also spoke about Relational Aggression and the 3 tiers with MTSS. Following that, Pam Leiker, of SWPRSC introduced additional information supporting Kent's updates. Pam will be presenting more on this at the next meeting.

Irene Perez, of SWPRSC, and Elva Solis, KSU, spoke about working with undocumented and ELL students. They distributed handouts from the KSDE website on administering state tests to ELL students. The counselors had several questions for them, this session was very informative to the counselors.

The meeting was completed with Joe Coles presenting on the Five Love Languages. This brought about quite a discussion among the counselors which led to several personal stories that were shared about their specific schools. This was a great networking time for the counselors.

It was an interesting, productive meeting with all sharing counseling ideas and strategies that have been working for them with their kids. Thank you to all that attended and we look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting on April 10, 2008.
